Very Rare Everest Champion/Racer from 50’s or 60’s. I am thinking it is mid 50’s based on the BIA stamped components and that was superseded by NJS in 1957. I bought this from the second owner, who bought it in the 70’s from the original owner, who had it made in Tokyo. Everest is highly regarded in Japan and Mr.Tsuchiya is considered by some the father of Japanese built bicycles as he trained some of the more well known masters.
A few items of note:
I ended up stripping the paint (not original) because it looked like it was hiding some damage and I was correct. Down tube has a nice dent on the drive side and down tube. See pictures for condition. This could most likely be rolled out and filled without a full tube replacement. The previous owner rode it after the repair but luckily I was able to remove the fiberglass patch without too much trouble. Definitely a larger dent, so I will leave the repair tactics up to the new owner.
This sale will come with some very cool and rare japanese parts. Takagi 3pin cranks and 2 chainrings (52/48) The chainrings and cranks are BIA stamped, the keirin race certification entity before NJS.
Sankosha Track hub set. These are not BIA stamped but were standard equipment for Keirin racing in the 50’s and 60’s from what I can gather.
The bottom bracket is very unique. Kind of an early sealed system with a central threaded sleeve and a double threaded non drive side cup. Drive side is set in place with a couple tabs and then tightened with the non drive side. I am wondering if this is proprietary to Everest? Would make switching out bottom brackets easy in a race setting, so maybe it was a japanese standard for keirin races, but I haven’t seen another example.
The stem and bars are a steel cinelli clone I believe but does have rust that has compromised the chrome. I assume these were original to the bike but not 100% sure.
The fork has a matching serial number and has been drilled out for a front brake unfortunately.
Seatpost is campagnolo and does have rust on the steel parts.
This is a cool project frame for someone and very rare. If you know Everest then you know what it is. I think you would be hard pressed to find another like it, especially in this size frame.
Frame measures 23” (58.42cm) on the seattube center to top and 21” (53cm) center to center on the top tube.
Thanks for looking and happy biking!
